At a minimum, being a much higher level than the creature you're farming seems to help improve item drops.
To be honest, it's probably worth ignoring the Idol for a while - you'll pick one up when you aren't expecting it and likely end the game with a pile of them.
Drop farming for transmutation items generally takes a while.
